Executive Function Skills Coaching
Helping Teens and Adults Build the Skills That Make Independence Possible
Executive function coaching is one-on-one skill coaching that helps teens and adults build time management, organization, planning, and follow-through. It is practical, strengths-based, and shaped around your goals.
Every day, we’re all expected to manage our time, stay organized, plan ahead, and follow through on tasks — at school, at work, and at home. These are called executive function skills, and for many people of any age, they don’t come naturally. That’s okay. These skills can be learned.
At Lincoln Square Coaching, we work one-on-one with teens and adults to strengthen the real-world thinking skills that support success in school, employment, and daily life. Our coaching is individualized, strengths-based, and built around what matters most to you, and to your family when they’re part of it.
What Are Executive Function Skills?
Executive function is a set of mental skills that help us get things done. Think of them as the “management system” of the brain. They include things like:
- Starting a task and staying focused on it
- Managing time and meeting deadlines
- Keeping track of belongings, assignments, or responsibilities
- Breaking a big goal into smaller, manageable steps
- Adjusting when plans change or things don’t go as expected
- Thinking before acting and managing emotions in tough moments
What’s really going on?
When these skills are still developing, someone might seem unmotivated, disorganized, or “not trying hard enough” — but what’s really happening is that they need support building the internal tools that make follow-through possible.
How Our Coaching Works
Our executive function coaching is delivered by trained career and transition coaches who understand how these skills connect to real life — not just school performance, but employment readiness, self-advocacy, and growing independence.
Here’s what you can expect:
Personalized Approach

- Looking for support that isn’t covered by a school or state program
- On an IEP or 504 plan and looking for additional support beyond what school provides
- Navigating ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, or other conditions where executive function is part of the picture

Frequently Asked Questions
What are executive function skills?
Executive function skills are the mental skills that help us get things done, like starting tasks, managing time, staying organized, planning ahead, and following through. They develop at different rates for different people, and they can be strengthened with practice and the right support.
How is executive function coaching different from ADHD coaching?
They overlap, and the difference is mostly in focus. Executive function coaching targets a specific set of skills (time management, organization, planning, task initiation, and follow-through) for anyone who struggles with them, with or without a diagnosis. ADHD coaching centers on living well with ADHD specifically, which usually includes those same skills alongside topics like energy, motivation, and self-understanding. Our coaching is strengths-based and neurodivergent-affirming either way, and we build it around your goals rather than a label.
How is executive function coaching different from therapy?
Coaching is forward-looking and skill-building, not clinical treatment. We help you set up practical systems and routines and build accountability for what is ahead. We do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, and we are glad to work alongside a therapist when that is part of your support. If you need documentation or clinical care, we will refer you to a licensed provider.
Can adults benefit from executive function coaching?
Yes. Executive function skills matter at every age, and many of the people we work with are working adults, career changers, and people navigating a transition. Coaching applies the same core skills (planning, time, organization, and follow-through) to work, study, and daily life.
Do I need a diagnosis to start?
No. You do not need a diagnosis, a referral, or an agency to begin. Coaching is open to anyone ages 14 and up who wants to build these skills, and we start from your strengths and goals.
How long does it take to see results?
Most people notice small, practical wins within the first few sessions, like a planning routine that finally sticks or a clearer way to start hard tasks. Lasting change usually builds over a few months of steady practice, and the support between sessions is a big part of what makes new habits hold. The right pace depends on your goals, and we set it together.
How much does executive function coaching cost?
Executive function coaching is part of our private, self and family funded coaching, and every engagement starts with a free consultation. For current rates and package details, see the pricing on our private coaching page.
Can executive function coaching be funded, and how does ACCES-VR relate?
Executive function coaching itself is private and is not billed to ACCES-VR or any government program. That said, some related, employment-focused support may be available at no cost through a funded program like ACCES-VR in New York if you qualify, and your free consultation includes help figuring out whether a funded route could cover what you need. Choosing to pay privately never gets you faster or better access than the funded path, and if you become eligible later we will help you make the switch.

How private coaching is funded
Private coaching at Lincoln Square Coaching is self and family funded, paid directly by you. It’s separate from the free, government-funded services we provide through ACCES-VR in New York, and it isn’t billed to insurance. Here’s the part worth knowing: some of what we offer privately may be available to you at no cost if you qualify. Employment-related job coaching, or communication and social-skills coaching for work or school, can often be funded through ACCES-VR, and if a funded program might cover what you need, we’ll help you find that route first. Eligibility is determined by the agency, not by us.
Choosing to pay is always a choice, and it never gets you faster or better access than the funded route. Private coaching is simply here for people who don’t qualify, want support beyond what those programs cover, or prefer to work with us directly. Same care, same team, a different door in.
Executive function coaching is one of three focus areas in our private coaching — explore career & workplace and social & communication coaching too.
