Understanding Supported Employment and Job Placement
The Short Version
Job Placement helps you find a job and supports you during your job search and first 90 days of work.
Supported Employment provides that same support, plus ongoing job coaching for as long as it's helpful to you—even months or years into your job.
Job Placement Services
Job Placement is designed to support you through your job search and help you get settled into a new position.
What you receive:
- Help identifying jobs that match your goals
- Resume and interview support
- Job search and employer outreach
- Check-ins during your first 90 days to help you adjust
This might be a good fit if you prefer independent work once you've learned the ropes, and short-term support during the transition feels like enough.
Supported Employment Services
Supported Employment provides everything Job Placement does, with additional ongoing support built in.
What you receive:
- Everything in Job Placement, plus:
- A job coach who works with you to learn your role and navigate the workplace
- Support building relationships with coworkers and supervisors who can help you succeed
- Ongoing check-ins and assistance after you're settled—for as long as you find it valuable
This might be a good fit if you prefer having a job coach in your corner long-term, or if regular check-ins help you feel confident and successful at work.
Choosing What Works for You
This is your career, and you're the expert on what kind of support works best for you. Your ACCES-VR counselor is a partner in this decision—not the one making it for you.
Some questions to explore together:
- What kind of support has helped me succeed in the past?
- Do I prefer figuring things out independently, or do I like having someone to check in with regularly?
- How do I handle changes at work—new tasks, new people, new schedules?
There's no right or wrong answer. Both paths lead to the same destination: a job you enjoy and a career you're building on your terms.
