NYC School Program Support Specialist
Description
Location & Schedule: Part-time hybrid position in NYC (Bronx and Manhattan), with potential expansion to New Jersey schools. Requires 2–3 days per week in-person for classroom work. Remote administrative work allowed when deadlines are met.
Starting Rate: $22.00 per hour
Position Overview: We are seeking a School Program Support Specialist to work in partner schools with high school special education students who have IEPs and varying capability levels. The ideal candidate is NYC-based, patient, engaging, and skilled at creating supportive learning environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Classroom Activities: Lead pre-designed classroom curriculum using a co-teaching model. Alternate between leading and supporting alongside another LSC staff member. Guide students through activities, adapting to individual capabilities and offering options to maximize participation.
- Student Support: "Meet students where they are" by providing individualized support to keep students on task and engaged.
- Classroom Engagement: Foster a supportive environment for students with moderate to significant learning differences. Use positive reinforcement and flexible strategies to encourage participation.
- Collaboration: Coordinate with your co-facilitator to ensure smooth classroom management and seamless transitions between activities.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Daily: Record attendance and individual student notes; upload to Carepatron portal
- Monthly: Write progress reports summarizing student engagement and development
Required Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Education, Social Work, or related field preferred
- Experience: 1–2 years working with individuals with developmental disabilities, neurodivergent populations, or in special education settings
- IEP Knowledge: Familiarity with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and supporting behavioral and educational goals
- Behavioral Support: Experience working with students who may require complex supports; ability to remain calm, professional, and patient under pressure
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and team collaboration
- Location: NYC-based with reliable transportation to school sites. Punctuality required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a Paraprofessional, Direct Support Professional (DSP), or Teacher's Aide
- Training in crisis intervention or de-escalation techniques (e.g., SCIP, CPI)
- Bilingual
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to remain active and mobile throughout the school day
